Deschutes River - Washington

First of all, there are TWO Deschutes rivers...one in Washington and one in Oregon.  Of course the one in Oregon passes through Bend and is the one honored by Deschutes Brewery.  The one in Washington empties into Budd Bay in Olympia.  The city of Tumwater, Washington (a suburb) is home to the river's falls.

I tell you this because we walked the falls park today.  It's home to a salmon hatchery, a hydro-electrical plant and a beautiful forest.


The original Olympia Beer Brewing Company staked its claim alongside the river back in 1933,

Strung between two rails of a split rail fence, this web was actually only about 4" wide.





If I were a salmon, and saw this, I'd be all, "fuck that shit, I'm going back to the ocean."  Fortunately for the salmon, the hatchery built ladders to help them jump upstream.



So lush and green...and beautiful.

Tomorrow morning we hit the road for Portland.  Of course we're looking forward to more beer since we didn't have any today.  I just have to face facts, I'm not as resilient as I used to be.  Dammit!

From a deep and restful slumber, we were rudely awakened by the fucking alarm clock at 4:45am.  Why so early for an 8:20 flight?  Because it's a holiday, it's DIA, it's Friday, and we're flying Southwest (where bags fly free but each passenger is charged a pound of flesh...and I am certain that if I had even one more pound of flesh on my body, I would NOT have fit into that middle seat). So Much Beer...So Little Time

Wandering around downtown Olympia revealed a plethora of bars, breweries, eateries, and lovely scenery. The capitol building viewed from the lawn of Capitol Park. We hit the Oly Taproom, Cascadia Brewing, Eastside Tavern, the Oyster House, and O'Blarney's Irish Pub.  Each place was knee-deep with local craft beers, and we indulged...a lot.   Sad thing is, we didn't get to try sooo many of the offerings...not enough time, not enough brain cells to spare.  But...tomorrow is another day.   Brace yourselves.

Off to Cascadia!

Well, it's time again for summer vacation.  And this year - like the past two years - we're heading to the Pacific Northwest (PNW). We tried to fit Olympic National Park and Vancouver into this adventure, but there were several logistics playing against us.  We now have at least four groups of friends that we have to visit when we go...and getting all of their schedules AND ours to work together was just too much.  So, we'll save the park and lovely Vancouver for next year. Of course we'll go see Joe's sister, Debbie, in Olympia, WA (south of Seattle at the bottom of the sound).  Lou and Mary, who live in Dallas, have a summer home in Portland, so we'll hook up with them on the 5th.  Mike and Martha used to live in Denver, but he got a job in Salem, and we got a standing invitation.  Then there's Matt and Sheila just north of Victoria on Vancouver Island...also a standing invitation.  By the way, do you know that it's easier to get to Vancouver Isl...
